UTSA uses long ball to defeat Dallas Baptist, 8-2

Box Score

DALLAS, Texas - The UTSA baseball team defeated Dallas Baptist, 8-2, with the help of solid pitching from junior Steven Vasquez and the long ball Thursday night at Patriot Field.

With the loss, the Patriots fall to 8-4 on the season and had their three-game winning streak snapped, while the Roadrunners improve to 5-7 and end their two-game losing streak.

Vasquez (2-0) struck out six Patriots and allowed just two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Junior Blake Brannon tossed two scoreless innings in relief as UTSA held DBU to its lowest scoring output of the season.

In the first inning, Sophomore Austin Krum singled to start the inning and stole second and third base, which set up a RBI sacrifice fly by Senior Jeremy Goldschmeding, giving DBU an early 1-0 lead.

Krum helped the Patriots add to their lead in the third inning, after hitting his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field wall.

UTSA responded with an unearned run in the fourth inning, on one hit and one error, leaving the score 2-1.

The Roadrunners hit a solo home run of their own in the fifth, tying the score at 2-2.

The Patriots threatened in the sixth inning, after loading the bases, but were unable to push across any runs.

UTSA took the lead in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on four hits, making the score 5-2.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Roadrunners added two more runs on one hit and two Patriot errors. UTSA added another solo home run in the ninth, pushing the score to 8-2.

DBU resumes play on Friday at 6 p.m. with game two of the three-game series against UTSA at Patriot Field.
