LAKE CHARLES, La. – Senior Hope Ortiz tossed a complete-game three-hitter and the Roadrunner bats came alive as the UTSA softball team run-ruled McNeese State, 8-0, on Sunday at Cowgirl Diamond.
With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in the Southland Conference. The Cowgirls fall to 10-14 and 3-3.
Ortiz held McNeese’s offense in check, striking out three and allowing no walks and only three hits in five scoreless innings. She improves to 2-0 and has yet to allow a run this year.
UTSA got the bats going after scoring just one run in 14 innings in a doubleheader loss Saturday. The Roadrunners scored eight runs on seven hits, including a 2-for-3, four-RBI performance from senior Jessica Els (right).
The Roadrunners struck for four runs in the top of the third inning. Els lined a double that plated freshman Leanne Risberg and sophomore transfer Kim Chavez. Junior Aimee Murray drove in pinch-runner Tamieka Trujillo with a double of her own to push the lead to 3-0. Senior Amanda Horton followed with an RBI-single to bring Murray home.
UTSA plated four more in the fourth to make it 8-0. Risberg got things started again with a leadoff single. She moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Chavez single. Els followed a walk to senior Mel Torres with a two-run single. Torres came home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of senior Amanda Horton, while Els came around on an error by the pitcher on a Cantu grounder.
The eight runs were more than enough for Ortiz who worked out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth for the run-ruling.
The Roadrunners return home to host Stephen F. Austin next Saturday-Sunday, March 25-26, at Roadrunner Field.
