Lamar hands UTSA a 6-4 loss in extra innings

BEAUMONT, Texas – Senior Matt Lambeth's two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Lamar to a 6-4 win over the UTSA baseball team in Southland Conference action Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

UTSA dips to 13-9 overall and 1-2 in SLC play, while Lamar improves to 15-10 on the year and 4-2 in league play.

Senior pitcher Caleb Barton pitched six and two-thirds innings for the Roadrunners, but got the loss and dips to 0-2 on the season. Barton struck out a season-high eight batters, allowed no walks and allowed a run. Junior pitcher Blake Brannon started the game for UTSA, but only went three and third after allowing four runs on six hits. He also collected three strike outs.

Scott Meyer got his first win of the season for the Cardinals. He went two innings, fanned two batters and walked one.

Sophomore Marshal Davis, senior J.R. Voyles and freshman Michael Rockett each collected two hits apiece. Davis led the Runners with two runs batted in, while Rockett and junior Mitch Ponza each recorded one RBI apiece.

Will Henderson and Collin DeLome led Lamar with three hits on the day. Lambeth paced the Cardinals with two RBI.

UTSA took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Freshman James Keithley reached base with a bunt single and sophomore Zach Etheredge got on with a walk. Rockett drove in Keithley from second base with a single to right field. Ponza’s double to left center field plated Etheredge and Rockett. Davis’ RBI single to left scored Ponza from second.

Lamar answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals scored their runs off four hits. C.J. Ebarb’s RBI double down the right field line highlighted the Cardinal inning.

The Cardinals got back-to-back singles to start off the bottom half of the fourth inning, but Barton got out the jam with three straight strike outs. Again, LU started an inning with consecutive singles with no outs; however, Barton got of the inning with the help of a double and a ground out to escape the eighth inning.

The Roadrunners loaded up the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Meyer came in to relieve Allen Harrington and got junior Ryan Saltzgaber to strike out to get out of the jam.

UTSA continues SLC play with a three-game series on March 24-26 at Roadrunners Field against SLC preseason favorite Northwestern State.
