SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA track and field teams brought the winning touch again Saturday, taking top honors in seven events on the final day of the UTSA Relays at Blossom Athletic Center.
Sophomores Ashley Allen (heptathlon) and Chelsea Malina (javelin) and the shuttle hurdle relay team grabbed gold for the women, while seniors Joseph Burton (javelin) and Marques Mitchell (110m hurdles), sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi (1,500m) and the 4x400m relay took top honors on the men’s side.
Allen (above) broke her own meet record by almost 300 points with a personal-best point-total of 4,937 to win the heptathlon. Leading after day one with 3,003 points, Allen briefly lost the lead to senior teammate Kandace Traywick after the long jump, but made up the ground with a 116-6 toss in the javelin. Allen won the final event - the 800m – in 2:25.63 to solidify first.
Traywick was second with a big PR, scoring 4,793 points to better her previous best of 4,380 set last year. She began the day with an 18-0 ˝ measure in the long jump, posted a 111-8 mark in the javelin and ran 2:36.22 in the 800m.
The women’s shuttle hurdle relay team of junior Lyndsey Sidney, senior Demetria Holmes, Traywick and Allen clocked a 58.31 to beat Houston’s 1:00.60.
Freshman Ashley Jackson caught Houston on the final leg to lead the Roadrunners to gold in the 4x100m relay. Jackson joined freshman Shanelle Slaughter, sophomore Brittany Epps and freshman Sara Ortiz for a 47.20 clocking.
Malina won the javelin with a 129-6 heave, well ahead of sophomore Kari Michalik’s runner-up throw of 114-2.
Burton led a strong showing for the Roadrunners in the men’s javelin, winning with a 183-4 mark. Senior Bryan Wolfe was third with a 180-9 measure, while freshman Tommy Wolfe and Brandon Glowacki were fourth (169-5) and fifth (162-0), respectively.
Mitchell (left) nipped sophomore teammate William Vese at the tape in the 110m hurdles, clocking a 14.32 to Vese’s 14.34.
Baloyi, the Southland Conference Indoor champion in the 800m, beat junior teammate Benson Cheserek to the line in the 1,500m, clocking a 3:56.40 for first. Cheserek was close behind in 3:56.89.
The men’s 4x400m relay team of freshman Gaston Griffin, seniors T.R. Sissel and David Burnett and junior Scott Briscoe closed out the meet in style, running away with the race in 3:10.99.
Sophomore Luke Johnson moved into second place on UTSA’s all-time discus list with a second-place throw of 167-5. Houston’s Jonathan Reeves was the top collegian (173-5).
Senior Rita Lambert nearly caught Lamar’s Clerc Koenk over the final 200m of the women’s 1,500m, finishing second in 4:44.69. Junior Hope Jimenez was third among collegians and fourth overall in 4:50.66.
Sidney finished third in the women’s 100m hurdles in 14.24, while senior All-American Ryanne Dupree, competing unattached, posted a 13.45 for the win. In other men’s finals, junior Larry Brooks was third in the 400m in 49.16.
The Roadrunners return to action next Saturday, March 25, when the travel to Austin for the Texas Invitational.
