LAKE CHARLES, La. – The UTSA softball team dropped a pair of low-scoring affairs Saturday afternoon as Jessica Denham pitched McNeese State to 2-1 and 2-0 victories at Cowgirl Diamond.
With the losses, the Roadrunners fall to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in Southland Conference. The Cowgirls improve to 10-13 and 2-3.
UTSA saw its eight-game win streak come to an end as Denham held the Roadrunners to just one run in pitching all 14 innings for McNeese in the doubleheader. The right-hander fanned five and allowed just one run on six hits in the opener and struck out seven and scattered five hits in game two.
The Roadrunner pitching staff was strong, as well. Junior Ursula Mares struck out seven and allowed just one earned run on four hits in game one, while sophomore Amanda Nikolenko struck out five and gave up one earned run on eight hits in the second game.
The Cowgirls struck for two runs in the bottom of the first in game one. Brooke Brodhead slapped a double to score Christina Allen. Courtney Parks later drew a bases-loaded walk to give McNeese a 2-0 lead.
UTSA scored its lone run of the afternoon in the top of the third. Sophomore Kim Chavez singled and scored on a single by senior Amanda Horton.
Pitching took over for both teams as 2-1 would be the final.
In the second game, McNeese scored both runs in the third on an RBI-double by Jana Jones and a run-scoring single by Jenny Clay.
Game three is set for noon Sunday.
