Lamar ends UTSA’s winning streak with a 13-3 win in Southland Conference action

BEAUMONT – C. J. Ebarb and Will Henderson collect four runs batted in to pace Lamar past UTSA, 13-3, in Southland Conference baseball action Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

With the loss, UTSA’s eight game winning streak came to end and the Roadrunners dropped to 12-8 overall and 0-1 in SLC play. Meanwhile, Lamar improves to 14-9 on the year and 3-1 in league play.

Lee Todesco led UTSA with two runs batted in, while J.R. Voyles added one RBI. Michael McKennon went 2-for-4 on the night for the Roadrunners.

Lamar was paced by Matt Lambeth’s 4-for-5 night and three RBI. Henderson collected three hits and scored twice, while Ebarb went 1-for-3 and scored once.

Steve MacFarland picked up his fourth win on the year and improved to 4-1. He tossed six innings, gave up two earn runs, allowed five hits and struck out nine batters.

Steven Vasquez suffered his first loss of the season. He went two innings, allowed eight runs off nine hits, while striking out one Cardinal.

UTSA took the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Marshal Davis led off with a walk. McKennon’s single to left field put runners on first and second. A pass ball by pitcher MacFarland moved Davis and McKennon to second and third. With two outs, Todesco’s RBI single to right field plated Davis and McKennon.

Lamar responded in the bottom if the first with five runs off five hits. Lambeth’s third home run of the season highlighted the inning.

The Cardinals extended their lead to 9-2 with four runs in bottom of the third inning. Dan Hernandez led off with a double to right field. Ebarb’s RBI double scored Hernandez from second. Hendeson’s two-run blast over the left field fence capped off the four-run inning.

The Roadrunners added one run in the fifth inning. Sophomore Phillip Allen began the inning with a walk. A groundout by Davis moved Allen to second, then came home on a RBI single by Voyles to right field.

In the sixth inning, LU tagged on one run off Ebarb’s sacrifice fly to center.

The Cardinals then added three more runs in the eighth inning. Ryan Baker reached base with a single up the middle, Cory Zimmerman drew a walk and a single by Hernandez loaded the bases. Ebarb picked up his fourth RBI of game with a sacrifice fly to scored Baker. Henderson also collected his fourth RBI as he plated Zimmerman home. LU scored its 13th run of the game off Lambeth’s RBI single.

UTSA and Lamar continue its three-game series March 18, at the Vincent-Beck Stadium. First pitch set for 2 p.m.
