Roadrunners win eighth straight with 6-2 victory at Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Senior Amanda Horton (right) and sophomore Kim Chavez collected three hits apiece and sophomore Amanda Nikolenko won her fifth straight decision as the UTSA softball team defeated Northwestern State, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Demon Diamond.

With the win, the Roadrunners extend their win streak to eight and improve to 12-6 overall. UTSA improves to 6-0 in the Southland Conference, the best start to league play in school history. The Demons fall to 11-17 and 2-4.

Horton went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, including her sixth home run of the season, while Chavez 3-for-4 with a double. UTSA pounded out 10 hits on the afternoon and increased its season home run total to 39 in 18 games.

Nikolenko tossed her second gem of the three-game series, fanning nine batters and allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings of work. She improved to 8-3 on the year and 4-0 in the conference.

The Demons struck first with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michelle Castellano singled and scored on an RBI-double off the bat of Lyndsey Gorski.

Horton quickly knotted the score at 1-1 with a solo blast to left in the top of the fifth.

The Roadrunners broke the game open with a five-run fifth. Senior Stacey Gillespie walked, advanced to second on a Chavez single and scored on a double to left center by senior Mel Torres. Senior Jessica Els drove in Chavez with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 3-1. Junior Aimee Murray reached on an error that allowed Torres to come home. Horton then doubled home Murray and freshman Brittany Cantu drove in Horton on a two-bagger of her own to right center.

Northwestern State plated a run in the seventh an RBI-double by Kristen Lindley.

Amanda Glenn allowed six runs – three earned – on 10 hits in falling to 6-12.

The Roadrunners head to Lake Charles, La., for a three-game series at McNeese State on Saturday-Sunday, March 18-19.
