SAN ANTONIO – Junior Steven Vasquez pitched seven strong innings and sophomore Marshal Davis (right) singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to lead the UTSA baseball team past Iowa, 3-1, during day one of the Baseball Express Collegiate Classic Friday at Wolff Stadium.

With the win, the Roadrunners extend their win streak to five games and improve to 9-7 on the season. The Hawkeyes fall to 5-2.

Vasquez struck out seven batters and allowed just five hits in seven scoreless innings. He left the game with a 1-0 lead, but senior Noah Tritz picked up the win in relief, fanning two batters in 1 2/3 innings to improve to 3-0. Luke O’Laughlin (0-1) allowed two earned runs on two hits in the loss.

UTSA struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman James Keithley drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a single up the middle off the bat of freshman Michael Rockett.

Both bats were held in check until the Hawkeyes broke through for a run in the top of the eighth. Nathan Price singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to right by Travis Sweet.

The Roadrunners answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Rockett led off with a single up the middle and took second on a fielding error by the center fielder. Davis followed with a single up the middle to plate Rockett with the go-ahead run. Voyles then sacrificed Davis, who had advanced to second on the previous play at the plate, to third. Junior Michael McKennon drove home Davis with a sacrifice fly to left center to push the lead to 3-1.

Tritz took care of the Hawkeyes in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
