Owens named second team all-SLC

PLANO, Texas – UTSA senior guard Andre Owens has been named to the 2005-06 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball second team the league office announced Monday.

Owens, a product of Irving High School, was one of five players chosen to the second team along with fellow seniors Steven Thomas and Jarrett Howell of Texas-Arlington, Marcus Clark of Stephen F. Austin and Tyronn Mitchell of Northwestern State.

In fact, the first team consisted of five seniors as well Player of the Year - Ricky Woods of Southeastern Louisiana, Clifton Lee of Northwestern State, Alan Daniels of Lamar, Chris Jordan of Sam Houston State and J.T. Williams of McNeese State.

Owens is the second leading scorer in the league with 17.9 points per game behind Daniels (23.1 ppg). He also appears in the top 15 in eight other statistical categories, including 12th in rebounds (5.8 rpg) and ninth in assists (3.50 apg).

Owens has scored 780 career points in his two seasons at UTSA and can move into the top 20 with 25 points against top-seed Northwestern State Tuesday night. He has posted four double-doubles, including 22 points and 10 assists in a 71-68 victory against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 23, and has scored 20 or more points 13 times this season.
