Season Outlook SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA men’s golf team kicks off the spring season on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 6-7, at the Rice Intercollegiate held at Willowisp Country Club in Missouri City, Texas.
The Roadrunners will face some stiff competition in the likes of Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Miami, Pacific, Rice, Richmond, Sam Houston State, Santa Clara, Stephen F. Austin, Tulane and UNC-Greensboro. The golfers will play 36 holes on Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start followed by 18 holes on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
Head coach Chris Donielson is in his sixth season at the helm of the program and welcomes back seven letterwinners from the 2004-05 campaign. Headlining that list is senior John Elizondo, a two-time all-conference performer and two-time individual medalist. Junior Matt Johnston was the 2004-05 Southland Conference Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year and qualified to play in the 2005 United State Amateur last August.
Two promising newcomers — sophomore transfer Thomas Kearney and freshman Kyle Collins — are expected to make an immediate impact. Kearney actually led the Roadrunners with a 74.25 scoring average in the fall, while Collins played in three tournaments and turned in a 75.78 average.
