Texas A&M-Corpus Christi upends UTSA, 6-4, in baseball action

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-6) downed UTSA baseball team (4-7) 6-4 at Islander Field.

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh after a two-run home run by senior Lee Todesco in the top half of the frame off Wes Nottebart, the Islanders rallied with one out. Randy Aguayo began the rally reaching on a fielding error by third baseman junior Ryan Saltzgaber. Martin Parra then dropped a single in over second base to put runners on the corner.

After UTSA starter junior Blake Brannon was lifted for loading the bases by walking Ruben Munoz, Galloway greeted reliever senior Noah Tritz by lining the ball into the right-center gap to clear the bases.

Pat Criss closed out the game by pitching two shutout innings despite walking the lead-off batter and giving up a single to Saltzgaber in the ninth. Criss earned his first save of the season, while Nottebart (1-0) earned the win.

The Islanders got on the board early with three runs in the bottom of the second after starter Matt Wilson got out of a jam in the top of the inning. Wilson, who walked four batters in 2-1/3 innings of work, pitched his way out of the inning by getting a pair of outs on pitch. He struck out sophomore Zach Etheredge, while Josh Plumaj threw out Todesco at second to end the inning by catching a base runner stealer for the second consecutive frame.

In the bottom of the inning, Plumaj singled to center with one out and scored on Cory Jordan’s home run to left off Brannon. Randy Aguayo followed with his third home run of the season for a 3-0 lead.

A pair of sacrifice flies in the third pulled the Roadrunners to within one, 3-2, but the visitors finished the inning with the bases loaded. UTSA, which also ended the fifth with bases loaded, left 10 men on base in the game.

Rightfielder David Williams also saved a run in the seventh prior to Todesco's home run with a diving grab of a line drive in deep right field by senior J.R. Voyles to start the inning.

UTSA hits the road with a three-game set against Dallas Baptist on March 2-4 in Dallas, Texas.
