UTSA baseball splits against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – UTSA baseball team (4-6) split today’s doubleheader action against future Southland Conference opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-9), winning the first game 9-5, but dropping the second game 6-4 in college baseball action at Whataburger Field.

In game one, junior pitcher Steven Vasquez picked up his first win of the season. He pitched a complete game, while fanning eight batters and allowed five runs on nine hits.

In the top of the third inning, UTSA scored four runs to take a 4-2 lead over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Freshman Michael Rockett led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk by sophomore Mashal Davis. Senior J.R. Voyles blasted a three-run shot, his first home run of the season, over the right field fence to give the Roadrunners a 3-2 lead. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber double to left field and moved to third on a steal. Senior Lee Todesco brought Saltzgaber home on a sacrifice fly.

The Roadrunners increased their 7-2 in the fourth inning with three more runs. Saltzgaber’s RBI double to left field highlighted the inning.

In the top of the sixth, UTSA tagged on two more runs. Freshman James Keithley’s single plated junior Michael McKennon and Saltzgaber, who both reached on back-to-back singles.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Islander cut the lead to 9-4. Junior David Williams started off the inning with a single. Senior Miguel Mercado reached base then junior Josh Plumaj RBI single scored Williams. Mercado scored the second of the inning on a UTSA error. TAMU-CC added one run the seventh inning. Freshman Ernie Olivarez’s single scored senior Ruben Munoz from second base.

In game two, junior Will Norman went seven innings en route for his first win of the season. Norman stuck out six Roadrunners and gave up four runs off five hits.

UTSA struck first with one run in the top of the third inning. Senior Robbie Johns led off with a single. Rockett’s sacrifice bunt moved Johns to second then came around to score on a throwing error by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Islander tied the game 1-1 in the bottom frame of the third. Senior Clint Galloway doubled down the right field line. A UTSA error allowed Galloway scored from third after being moved by Williams’.

TAMU-CC pushed 3-1 with two runs scored in the fourth inning. Senior Jeremy Molina’s triple capped the two run inning.

The Roadrunner knotted the game 3-all in sixth inning, courtesy of McKennon’s two-run bomb to right field.

The Islanders regained the lead 6-3 in the bottom half of the seventh frame. Freshman Martin Parra and Munoz drew back-to-back walks. A Roadrunner error allowed Parra to score, then an RBI single by Olivarez scored Munoz. Williams' fielder’s choice plated the third run of the inning.

UTSA pushed on run across the plate in the eighth inning. Davis began with a single, Voyles reached on with a walk. McKennon’s groundout advanced Davis and Voyles to second and third. Saltzgaber’s groundout to short brought Davis home.

Senior closer Adam Bruce recorded his first save of the season. He worked two innings, while striking out one batter and allowing one hit.

UTSA concludes its three-game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christ on Feb. 26 at Islander Field, first pitch slated at 1 p.m.
