AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Mel Torres added another home run to the Roadrunners’ season tally, but the UTSA softball team dropped a pair of games, 5-1 and 8-0, at No. 5 Texas on Tuesday afternoon at McCombs Field.

Torres got the day started off nicely for UTSA (4-6), lining a solo home run to left field off Longhorns ace and 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Cat Osterman to lead off the top of the first in game one. Her round-tripper gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead and 24 home runs on the season.

That would be the only run the Roadrunner bats could muster as Texas (12-1) displayed strong pitching in both halves of the doubleheader.

Osterman fought back from the Torres blast to strike out 20 batters, holding UTSA hitless the rest of the way to improve to 7-0 on the season. Junior Ursula Mares (1-3) allowed five runs – four earned – on five hits and recorded five strikeouts in the loss.

Shannon Thomas singled, stole second and came home after stealing third as a result of a throwing error to quickly tie the game at 1-all after one inning of play.

Rachael Cook tripled to left field to plate Chez Sievers in the second and put Texas up for good, 2-1. The Longhorns tacked on three more in the third and held on from there for the 5-1 win.

Megan Denny carried a no-hitter into the top of the fifth in game two, but freshman Rachel Rackley broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right field but Denny held on to the shutout in improving to 5-1 on the year. Sophomore Amanda Nikolenko (3-3) struck out three but allowed eight runs in the loss.

Cook’s two-run home run in the bottom of the second gave Texas a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. The Longhorns added four in the third on a Sievers RBI-single and a three-run double by Jacqueline Williams. Crystal Saenz singled up the middle with two down in the fourth to increase UT’s lead to 8-0.

The Roadrunners travel to Prairie View, Texas, for a round robin with Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern on Saturday, Feb. 25.
