PLANO, Texas - UTSA senior All-American Ryanne Dupree and men’s head coach Aaron Fox have been honored as Southland Conference Indoor Women’s Athlete of the Year and Men’s Coach of the Year, respectively, as the postseason awards were announced by the league office Tuesday.
Fox guided the men to their first-ever SLC Indoor championship last weekend in Houston as the Roadrunners scored 111 points to edge Sam Houston State (104.33) and defending champion Stephen F. Austin (103). UTSA won two individual titles — senior Brandon Buteaux in the heptathlon and sophomore transfer Mthobisi Baloyi in the 800 meters — and displayed impressive depth in several events en route to the league crown.
Dupree was everywhere on Friday and Saturday as she scored points in five different events and was the meet’s High Point Scorer with 28.5. She won the pentathlon, breaking her own two-year-old meet record of 3,800 points with a school-record and NCAA provisional-qualifying 4,055. In two of the five events of the pentathlon, Dupree also established new championship marks. Her time of 8.50 in the 60-meter hurdles broke the 2003 record of 8.75 by UTSA’s Rhonda Ray and Dupree’s high jump of 5-7 is an inch better than the old record.
In addition to her pentathlon win, Dupree finished second in the high jump (5-6), second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.47) and eighth in the long jump (18-11.25). She also anchored the third-place 4x400-meter relay team that posted a time of 3:48.89.
Dupree, a six-time conference champion, was the Athlete of the Year, Outstanding Track Performer and High Point Scorer at the 2005 SLC Outdoor.
