Baylor hands UTSA a 5-0 loss

Box Score

WACO, Texas – Baylor Bears (5-0) used solid pitching to shut out the UTSA baseball team (3-5), 5-0, in non-conference action at Baylor Ballpark Tuesday night. The game was called after five innings due to heavy fog.

UTSA started the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the first inning, but senior pitcher Ryan LaMotta got out of inning with a strikeout.

Senior Zach Dillon gave Baylor the early 1-0 lead on a home run to right field with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.

In the top of the second inning, UTSA again threatened with runners on first and second, but junior Cory VanAllen got out of the jam with a fly out and a strike out.

The Bears scored one in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Chase Gerdes led off the inning with a walk then came around to score when senior Seth Fortenberry was walked with the bases loaded.

Baylor tagged on two more runs to make the score 4-0 in the fourth inning. Freshman Drew Bias and Gerdes were plated by freshman Beamer Weems’ triple down the right field line.

In the bottom half of the fifth, the Bears scored their fifth run of the game on a Roadrunner error.

Junior pitcher Blake Brannon suffered his third loss of the season. He went three and one-third innings, allowing four runs and six walks.

LaMotta picked up his second win on the year. LaMotta pitched one inning, gave up a hit and struck out one batter.

UTSA returns to the diamond this weekend with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
