SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA men’s golf team sits in a tie for 11th place, but are just seven shots out of the top five after two rounds of the UTSA Intercollegiate held Monday at Oak Hills Country Club (6,691 yards / par 71).
The Roadrunners overcame an opening round of 17-over-par 301 for a 10-over 294 in the second 18 Monday. Their 36-hole total of 595 is tied with Rice for 11th and is just seven strokes behind Illinois State’s 588 for fifth. Baylor leads after two rounds with a 290-283—573, followed by Lamar (576), Louisiana-Monroe (580) and Nebraska (585).
Individually, junior Matt Johnston is in a tie for 22nd after carding a 74-73—147. Senior John Elizondo is tied for 31st at 75-74—149, while sophomore transfer Thomas Kearner is close behind in a tie for 35th at 76-74—150. Sophomore Nick Olivarri is tied for 67th (83-73—156) and freshman Kyle Collins is tried for 69th (76-81—157).
Also playing as individuals for UTSA were sophomore Shane Costelloe (T-31 / 73-76—149), junior Kitt Thabungkan (T-47 / 78-74—154); sophomore Sean Burch (T-62 / 79-76—155) and sophomore Philipp Krohn (T-76 / 81-79—160).
Baylor’s Ryan Baca fired an 11-under 64-67—131 and has a seven shot lead over Matt Miller of Illinois State (68-70—138) in the individual race.
The third gets underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Admission is free.
