LAFAYETTE, La. – UTSA men’s tennis picked up its first Southland Conference win with a 5-2 win over Nicholls State in men’s college action in Lafayette, La.
The Roadrunners began the day taking the doubles point. Seniors Hetori Chaves and Anthony Portois cruised past Sebastien Bolderick and Vlad Lucian Popa of Nicholls State 8-2. Freshmen Andre Moreira and Robin Fernandes defeated Denis Borisevich and Gilva 8-5, while Adam Becker and Joe Olfindo won their match via a walk over.
In singles, UTSA won four of the six matches. Moreira handed Normand a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the No. 2. Fernandes breeze past Borisevich 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3. Becker dropped the first set 5-7 to Gilva, but rebounded winning the next set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-6. Chaves won his match via a walk over.
Nicholls State managed to win two set on the day. Normand defeated Portois 6-2, 6-2, while teammate Van Bolderick got the 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over Olfindo.
UTSA men’s team returns to action against Tulsa on Feb. 24 in Austin, Texas at 10 a.m.
