UTSA baseball scores a 5-4 win over Army

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior Ryan Saltzgaber’s walk with bases loaded gave UTSA baseball team 5-4 win over Army Black Knights in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

The Roadrunners improve to 3-4 on the year, while Army dropped its third straight game (0-3).

Five UTSA players collected one hit on the day. Saltzgaber (right)  led the Roadrunners with two runs batted in.

Junior Kyle Scogin paced Army with one hit and two RBI and sophomore Chris Simmons collected one RBI.

UTSA jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom o the first inning. Senior J.R. Voyles led off with a single to right field then stole second base. Senior Lee Todesco loaded the bases when he was hit-by-pitch. Sophomore Zach Etheredge drove in the first run when he was hit-by-pitch, which allowed Voyles to come home. Davis scored the second the run of the inning on a wild pitch by freshman Tyler Stohr.

Army got one run in the top of the fourth inning. Connell reached on a UTSA error then stole second and moved to third on another Roadrunner miscue. A pass ball scored Connell.

The Black Knights scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Kyle Fleming led off the inning with a single to left field then went to third on a single by freshman Andrew Ernesto, a wild allowed Ernesto to go to second. Junior Kyle Scogin’s single up the middle plated Fleming and Ernesto, giving Army a 3-2 lead.

The Roadrunners regained the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore Phillip Allen started the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on sophomore Marshal Davis’ single. Junior Michael McKennon’s sacrifice fly to right field scored Allen. Todesco’s single with two outs plated Davis from second.

Army knotted the game 4-4 in the eighth inning. Sophomore Chris Simmons’ RBI single to right field, scored Scogin from second base.

The Roadrunner comeback began with Voyles’ walk. A throwing error by Army’s pitcher senior Monte Jones allowed Voyles to go to third. Jones intentionally walked Davis and McKennon to load the bases. With one out, Saltzgaber plated the winning run on a walk.

Junior pitcher Steven Vazquez (left) got the no decision, but pitched a strong seven innings, struck out a season-high nine batters, gave up four hits and three runs. Senior Noah Tritz picked up his first win of the season. Tritz tossed one and one-third innings, while fanning four.

Jones got the loss for Army (0-1). He tossed one inning, gave up one run, allowed five walks and struck out one batter.

UTSA hits the road this Tuesday, Feb. 21, when they return to Waco, Texas for a NCAA rematch against Baylor at 6 p.m.
