UTSA baseball drops, 10-4, decision to Kentucky

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Kentucky (2-0) scored seven runs in the final two innings en route to a 10-4 win over the UTSA baseball team (2-4) Friday night in non-conference baseball action at Wolff Stadium.

Junior Michael McKennon (right) paced UTSA with four hits in five at bats, including his first home run of the season. Freshman Eric Johnston led the Roadrunners with two runs batted in, while freshman James Keithley went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Junior Sean Coughlin went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a home run on the night. Juniors Ryan Strieby and Billy Grace each collected two hits.

McKennon put the Roadrunners on the board first with a solo blast to right field with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.

Kentucky tied the game 1-all in the top of the second inning. Grace led off with a double then moved to third on a groundout. Sophomore Collin Cowgill brought Grace home with his groundout to second.

The Runners regained their lead 2-1 when sophomore Zach Etheredge reached on with a double to right center. Johnston’s single moved Etheredge to third and he was plated by Keithley on a sacrifice fly.

UTSA pushed its lead to 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Marshal Davis and McKennon started off the frame with back-to-back singles then Etheredge was hit-by-pitch to load the bases with out. Johnston’s single plated Davis and McKennon to give the Roadrunners a three-run lead. This would the last time UTSA held the lead.

Coughlin cut the deficit to one-run with his two-run homer to right field in the top of the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, the Wildcats took the lead for good as they pushed three runs across on four hits and a UTSA error to make the score 6-4.

In the eighth inning, UK extended its lead to 10-4 with four runs on two hits and a Roadrunner miscue. Sophomore Antone DeJesus began the inning with a double down the right field line. Strieby RBI double scored DeJesus. With bases loaded Grace was hit-by-pitch to Strieby. A UTSA mishap allowed for junior John Shelby and Coughlin to score the third and fourth run of the inning.

Senior Craig Snipp came in relief for his first win of the season, as he tossed six scoreless innings, while fanning five batters.

Junior Josh Blakley picked up his first loss of the season (1-1). Blakley went a third of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit.

UTSA returns to the field Saturday, Feb. 18, as they take on Army at 6 p.m. in Wolff Stadium.
