Strong track, heptathlon efforts highlight day one for UTSA at SLC Indoor Live Results
HOUSTON – The UTSA men’s track and field team displayed its depth in the running preliminaries and in the heptathlon on day one of the Southland Conference Championships held Friday at Bill Yeoman Field House.
Senior All-American Brandon Buteaux (right) sits in good position to defend his conference title in the heptathlon as his 2,963 points are the top day-one total. Aaron Harlan of Stephen F. Austin is close behind with 2,858. The Wolfe brothers – freshman Tommy and senior Bryan – are in scoring position, as well. Tommy is in fourth place with 2,776, while Bryan is in sixth with 2,729. Freshman Brandon Glowacki is in striking range for points with 2,513, which stands 10th after four events.
The Roadrunners were impressive in preliminary-round action on the track. A dominating performance in the 800m prelim opened eyes as five UTSA runners advanced to Saturday’s final. Leading the way was junior Larry Brooks, who posted the fastest qualifier of the day, a 1:55.17 clocking. Right behind him was sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi’s 1:55.44 effort. Senior Justin Pitchford and junior Chris Layman were fourth (1:56.22) and fifth (1:56.58), while sophomore Eric Miller turned in the seventh-fastest time (1:56.70).
Redshirt freshman William Vese posted the fastest time in the prelims of the 60m hurdles, a personal-best 7.97. Senior Marques Mitchell also advanced to the final with an 8.23 timing.
UTSA pushed two runners through in both the 60m and 400m. Sophomores Cedric Harris and Steven Brown moved on in the 60m as both clocked a 6.88 in the semis. Freshman Gaston Griffin turned in the best 400m time of the day, a 48.56, while senior T.R. Sissel also advanced with a 49.67. Senior David Burnett just missed a chance at defending his conference crown with the ninth-fastest time, a 49.79. Junior Scott Briscoe stayed alive in the 200m with a 21.93 clocking.
In finals action on the track, junior Benson Cheserek finished fifth in the 5,000m with a 15:27.70 clocking, while the distance medley relay team of Pitchford, sophomore Dominic Brown, Brooks and sophomore Michael Schwartz also placed fifth in 10:25.41.
Steven Brown (left) placed fifth in the long jump with a 23-4 measure to contribute four points. Buteaux scratched for one point in the high jump with a 6-4 ľ clearance, while sophomore Luke Johnson and senior Rob Stager finished seventh (53-9 ľ) and eighth (52-0 ˝), respectively, in the 35-pound weight throw. Johnson’s mark of 53-9 ľ broke Stager’s school record of 53-7 ˝ set earlier this season.
The Roadrunners sit eighth in the team standings with 14 points after six scored events. Defending champion Stephen F. Austin is first with 63, followed by Texas-Arlington (33) and McNeese State (29.5).
The SLC Indoor Championships continue Saturday at Yeoman Field House.
