Game 1 Box Score   |   Game 2 Box Score

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UTSA softball team added four more home runs to its national-leading total, but No. 9 Texas A&M used timely hitting to score a 7-6 win in game one and solid pitching for a 4-2 win on the nightcap in sweeping a doubleheader Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex.

The Roadrunners fall to 4-3 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 5-2.

Senior Amanda Horton went 2-for-4 with her fourth home run of the season and three runs batted in to lead the Roadrunner offense in game one. Freshman Brittany Cantu also had two hits, including her team-best fifth long ball.

Junior Aimee Murray added a two-run round-tripper in the second game, giving UTSA 22 for the season.

UTSA scratched for a run in the top of the first in game one. Senior Mel Torres led off with a single up the middle and senior Jessica Els followed with a double to left center. After a lineout, Horton singled to center field to drive in Torres with the first run.

The Roadrunners tacked on another run in the top of the second. Senior Stacey Gillespie led off with a single off the wall in right field. Freshman Leanne Risberg laid down a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by the Aggies put runners at first and second with nobody out. Sophomore Kim Chavez sacrificed the runners over and Torres drew a walk to load the bases. Els then grounded back to the pitcher but the throw got away from the catcher, allowing Gillespie to score the second run. A&M got out of the jam with a fielder’s choice groundout to the pitcher and a strikeout.

The Aggies tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the second on a two-run blast to left field by Holly Ridley that scored Jami Lobpries, who reached on a two-out error.

Cantu lined a solo shot just over the left field fence to put UTSA back up, 3-2, in the top of the fifth, but A&M answered with four in the bottom of the frame to go up 6-3. Rocky Spencer doubled home Beverly Rowan and Ronda Smith doubled home Spencer to put the Aggies up, 4-3. Jamie Hinshaw added a double of her own after a pitching change, plating two more runs.

UTSA tied the game in the top of the sixth on a pair of home runs. Murray drew a two-out walk and scored on a long blast to left center off the bat of Horton. Freshman Rachel Rackley followed with a solo shot to knot the score at 6-all and chase starter Amanda Scarborough

A&M won it on a strange play in the bottom of the seventh. Sharonda McDonald led off with an infield single and Hinshaw followed with a single to short right field. McDonald then advanced to third on a fielding error and used her speed to score on a putout attempt at second base, giving the Aggies the 7-6 victory.

Lisa Gorzycki (1-0) gave up two hits in 1 1/3 scoreless innings, picking up the win in relief of Amanda Scarborough. Junior Ursula Mares (1-1) picked up the loss in relief of starter Amanda Nikolenko, allowing two unearned runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.

A&M starter Megan Gibson carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in game two, a 4-2 win for the Aggies.

Hinshaw gave A&M a 3-0 lead with a three-run blast in the bottom of the third inning. Gibson added a solo shot to start the fourth to make it 4-0.

Els broke up Gibson’s no-hit bid with a double off the wall in left center field to lead off the top of the seventh. Murray followed with a line drive home run way over the center field fence to pull the Roadrunners to within 4-2.

UTSA brought the tying run to the plate after a two-base error allowed Rackley to reach second base on a hard ground ball with one out. A&M got out of the jam with a groundout and a strikeout.

The Roadrunners will travel to Stillwater, Okla., for a doubleheader at Oklahoma State on Thursday, Feb. 16. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. UTSA originally was scheduled to play in the Oklahoma State Easton Classic on Friday-Sunday, but that tournament has been cancelled due to expected bad weather.
