PLANO, Texas – The UTSA softball program has swept the Southland Conference pitcher and hitter of the week accolades after winning the Las Cruces Hilton Invitational last weekend. Amanda Nikolenko was voted the Aeropostale/SLC Pitcher of the Week, while teammate Mel Torres picked up hitter of the week honors for games played from Feb. 6-12.

For the week, the sophomore right-handed pitcher went 3-1 and produced a 2.33 ERA. Nikolenko allowed just six earned runs, eight total runs, 21 hits, 15 strikeouts and four walks in 18.0 innings of work.
The Ashland, Mo., native scattered six hits and allowed two runs while striking out six batters in five innings in the 12-2 win over Colorado State. She picked up her other two wins in relief, including tossing three innings and allowing just one earned run in UTSA’s 9-8 win over Ohio State.
Torres, a Dallas native, was named the tournament MVP after batting a .579 (11-for-19) with four home runs and 10 runs batted in as the Roadrunners slugged 18 home runs in the five games. Torres also produced a 1.211 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage.
She opened the season with a 4-for-4, two-RBI performance in the 11-3 win over Portland State and followed that with two home runs and four RBI in a 12-2 run-ruling of Colorado State.
In the championship game on Sunday, Torres (right) went 4-for-5 with three RBI, including the game-winning single in the top of the eighth inning in UTSA’s 9-8 victory over Ohio State.
Other outstanding pitching performances from around the league came from Amanda Glenn of Northwestern State, Sarah Lancour of Texas State, Louisiana-Monroe’s Lindsay Rittenhouse, Sam Houston State’s Brandi Crnkovic and Kari Hugie of Stephen F. Austin. Texas-Arlington’s Autumn Petrino and Lindsey Taylor of ULM had solid offensive weeks, as did Elizabeth Gibson of Sam Houston State, Glenn, Alex Newton of Texas State and Heater Hebert of SFA.
Players of the week voting consists of softball sports information directors and is release by the league office each Tuesday.
