No. 10 Texas handles UTSA, 6-1, in non-conference baseball action

AUSTIN – No. 10 Texas used a couple of two-run innings to score a 6-1 win over UTSA baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field in non-conference college baseball action in Austin, Texas.

UTSA was led by junior Michael McKennon’s (right) two hits, including his second double of the year. Junior Ryan Saltzgaber also collected two hits on the day. Freshman Eric Johnston drove in UTSA’s only run.

Junior Chais Fuller went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI, while three Longhorns collected two hits apiece.

Texas took a 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, when freshman Jordan Danks led off with a single and stole second base, a walk by freshman Kyle Russell put runners on first and second. Freshman Preston Clark’s single to center field scored Danks from second, then a UTSA error allowed Russell to come home for the second run of the inning.

The Roadrunners threaten in the top of the sixth inning with runners on first and second with one out. Freshman pitcher Joey Parigi retired the next two batters to end the inning.

UT tagged on two more runs to push its lead to 4-0 in bottom of the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Clark and junior Clay Van Hook plated Suttle and Danks home.

The Longhorns added one run off Dank’s single to center field to scored Fuller in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Texas scored its sixth run on a RBI sinlge by Fuller to scored junior Nick Peoples, who reached on a triple.

UTSA scored its only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Johnston to score McKennon who reached on a double down the right field line. UTSA had runners on second and third, but freshman Justin Street’s strike out ended the Roadrunner rally.

Junior right handed pitcher Blake Brannon suffered his second loss of the season (1-2).
Brannon went five innings, giving up two runs off five hits, while fanning four batters.

Austin Woods (1-0) tossed four shutout innings and gave up two hits. The lefty struck out three Roadrunners.

UTSA returns home for a round robin tournament at Wolff Stadium this weekend. The Roadrunners take on Kentucky Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.
