UTSA defeats Utah, 9-6, to take season series

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA baseball team (2-2) took the season series over Utah (2-4) by putting up a five spot in the first inning en route to a 9-6 win in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

Junior third baseman Ryan Saltzgaber paced UTSA with three hits, while sophomore catcher Zach Etheredge collected a team-best two run batted in for the Roadrunners.

Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury went 3-for-5 with three RBI on the day for the Utes.

UTSA started off the game with five runs on three hits. Senior J.R Voyles led off the inning with a walk, junior Michael McKennon reached base via a hit-by-pitch and senior Lee Todesco loaded the bases with a walk. Etheredge’s smacked a double to left field to score Volyes and McKennon. Saltzgaber plated Todesco with a single to center field for the third run of the inning. Etheredge came home on a groundout play by freshman James Keithley. Freshman Michael Rockett’s double down the left field line capped off the five run inning.

Utah cut the lead to 5-2 in top of half of the second inning. Senior Clayne Garrett reached base on a fielder’s choice, a walk by junior Joe Mozeleski put runners on first and second for the Utes. With two outs, freshman Corey Shimada’s single to left field scored Garrett and Mozeleski.

In the fourth inning, Utah tied the game 5-5 with a help of a UTSA error that scored two runs and a single junior Tyler Kmetko highlighted the Utes three-run inning.

The Runners regained the lead 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth innings. Sophomore Phillip Allen began the inning with a single then stole second. Back-to-back doubles by Voyles and McKennon gave UTSA a 7-5 lead. McKennon advanced to third on a groundout and came home on a pass ball to score UTSA’s eight run of the game.

Utah pulled with two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Jay Brossman.

The Roadrunners added an insurance run the bottom half of the sixth inning. Todesco’s single to center field scoring Voyles from second base to give UTSA a three-run advantage.

Senior Noah Tritz came in the top of the ninth inning, ending any chance of a Utah comeback, as he picked up his second save on the season. Junior pitcher Josh Blakley came in relief for his first wins on the year. Blakley went two solid innings, allowing one run on one hit and struck out two batters.

Senior pitcher Shad McCord got loss for Utah. McCord pitched two and a third innings, giving up three hits and one run.

UTSA travels to Austin, Texas, for a single game against the defending NCAA champions Texas on Tuesday, Feb. 14. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
