UTSA escapes with 53-50 win over Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – Junior forward Vivian Ewalefo’s fourth double-double of the year with 21 points and 10 rebounds led the UTSA women’s basketball team to a 53-50 victory over Lamar in Southland Conference action Saturday night at the Montagne Center.

Ewalefo paced UTSA with game-high honors of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while senior center Lacy Mingee chipped in with 10 points.

Leading Lamar in scoring was senior forward Audrea Samuel with a team-high 15 points and six rebounds.

Lamar jumped early to a 4-0 lead in the first half with 15:49 left. UTSA responded with a 16-2 run at the 9:15 mark of the frame. Ewalefo scored eight points, while Mingee added six points during the run.

The Roadrunners upped their lead to 23-13 on 3-pointer by freshman guard Farren Fox from the right corner with 4:18 remaining in the half.

LU used a 7-0 run to close within three-points (23-20) when Samuel made good on a three point play at the 1:29 mark. At the half, UTSA led 24-21 over Lamar.

The Roadrunners opened the second half with a 34-26 lead, when senior guard Nicole Dunson converted on a 3-point basket with 14:34 left. UTSA increased its lead to 43-33 with a 9-5 run at the 9:21 mark.

The Cardinals pulled within four points (45-41) on a pair of free throws by Samuel with 6:42 to go in the game; however, a layup made by Fox pushed the lead back to 50-44 with 1:30 remaining.

Lamar would pulled with two-points at 52-50 with 19 ticks left in the game, but a free throw by Ewalefo sealed the game for UTSA 53-50.

UTSA returns home for a SLC match up against league leading Texas-Arlington on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest.
