| Feb. 11, 2006 Contact: Kyle Stephens (210) 458-4907 UTSA beats Utah, drops 3-2 decision to New Mexico State UTSA 8, Utah 0 | New Mexico St. 3, UTSA 2 LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The UTSA home run machine continued its torrid pace with five more long balls in an 8-0 run-ruling of Utah on Saturday afternoon at the Las Cruces Hilton Invitational. New Mexico State scored in its final at-bat to edge the Roadrunners late Saturday night, 3-2.
In the first game, the Roadrunners launched five home runs to increase their season total to 15 through three games. UTSA launched five each in an 11-3 victory over Portland State and a 12-2 run-ruling of Colorado State on Friday.
The Roadrunners wasted little time scoring as senior Mel Torres singled and scored on a home run by Jessica Els (right) that gave UTSA a 2-0 lead after one inning.
UTSA struck for three solo shots in the bottom of the second. Sophomore transfer Kim Chavez led off with her first home run before Els went yard again for a 4-0 lead. Junior Aimee Murray launched one of her own to make it 5-0 after two.
UTSA tacked on two in the third. Freshman Brittany Cantu led off with a walk and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Torres. Els picked up her fourth RBI of the game on a single to right that scored Chavez, who reached on a fielding error.
Murray ended the game with her second long ball, putting the eight-after-five run rule in effect.
Sophomore Amanda Nikolenko (2-0) picked up the win, working four scoreless innings in relief of junior Ursula Mares.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh in the second game, senior Amanda Horton lined a two-run shot to knot the score at 2-all. It was her fourth long ball of the season.
The Aggies came back with a pair of singles in the bottom of the frame to set up a game-winning single to center field by Rishelle Gastelum that plated Kasey Sandlin.
With the split, UTSA moved to 3-1 on the season. The Roadrunners close out the tournament against Ohio State in the championship game at 12:30 p.m. Central time.
