SAN ANTONIO – A couple of big innings combined with Roadrunner miscues propelled Utah to a 10-1 win over UTSA here Saturday afternoon.
The Utah (2-3) win ties the series at one game each heading into Sunday’s rubber match slated for 1 p.m. at Wolff Stadium.
UTSA (1-2) scratched across one run in the bottom half of the second after Robbie Johns plated Lee Todesco with a single to left field. The second inning run was all the UTSA offense could muster off five hits on the day, as Utah starter Eric King kept the Roadrunners off balance. King picked up the win with six innings of work on the day, while Rory James closed it out with three innings of one-hit relief for his first save of the year.
Meanwhile, UTSA struggled on the mound, issuing six walks and allowing 12 hits, including a two-run home run by Jay Brossman in the fifth inning.
The big inning for the Utes came in the top half of the third, when with two outs and a runner on second, Brossman laced an RBI single to right field. Erich Kemp drew a walk to put runners on first and second, extending the inning for Utah. John Welsh took advantage, ripping a two-run double down the left field line. An infield error then scored Welsh, pushing the Utah lead to four runs.
Brossman finished the day 2 for 5 with two runs and three batted in for Utah, as the top five hitters in their lineup all picked up at least one hit and scored at least once in the contest. Kemp finished the day 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI.
For the Roadrunners, designated hitter Zach Etheridge had the squad’s only extra-base hit on the day with a double to left. Five different Roadrunners picked up one hit each on the day. Caleb Barton earned the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
