UTSA holds off Utah, 5-4

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Senior Lee Todesco went 2-for-3 and junior Blake Brannon worked five solid innings as the UTSA baseball team held off Utah, 5-4, Friday night at Wolff Stadium.

With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 1-1 on the season while the Utes fall to 1-3.

The Roadrunners broke through for three runs in the bottom of the second. Todesco walked, advanced to third in a single by senior Ryan Saltzgaber and scored on a single by freshman Danny Cornejo. Freshman Eric Johnston singled home Saltzgaber. Senior J.R> Voyles then doubled home Cornejo to make it 3-0.

UTSA added two more in the fourth as sophomore Phillip Allen singled, moved to second on an error by the left fielder and scored on a James Keithley single through the right side. Voyles, who reached on the error, moved to third on the play and then scored on a one-out groundball to the first baseman off the bat of junior Michael McKennon.

The Utes got on the board in the fifth as Adam Frank singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout, and scored on a groundout to the shortstop off the bat of Khoury.

A big, two-out double by Joe Mozeleski plated two unearned runs in the top of the sixth as Utah cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Utes pulled to within one run in the top of the seventh on a two-out single to center by Jay Brossman that scored Corey Shimada, who reached on a single. The Roadrunners got out of a two-out, two-on jam as Voyles made a nice diving stop in the hole between first and second and threw out John Welsh with the pitcher Josh Ruffin covering.

UTSA’s relief pitching held strong as senior Noah Tritz closed out the game with three strikeouts over the last 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the year.

Brannon allowed just one run on four hits and posted four strikeouts in running his record to 1-1. Lucas Trinnaman allowed five runs – three earned – on seven hits in falling to 0-1.

The Roadrunners and the Utes play game two of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
