Elizondo leads UTSA to fourth-place finish at Rice Intercollegiate

MISSOURI CITY, Texas - Led by a fifth-place finish from senior John Elizondo, the UTSA men’s golf team opened the spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Rice Intercollegiate held Monday-Tuesday at Willowisp Country Club (par 70/6,700 yards).

Elizondo (right) followed an opening day of 71-74—145 with a final-round, five-over-par 75 to finish in a tie with Heon Young Lee of Rice for fifth place at 10-over 220, just one shot off the individual lead. Derrick Whiting of Colorado State won a four-player, sudden-death playoff on the third hole. He fired a 72-77-70—219 overall, while Brian Grossman of Stephen F. Austin, Michael Nicoletti of Santa Clara and Trey McNeill of Louisiana Tech all finished tied for second after the playoff.

In the team standings, UTSA broke a tie with Richmond for fourth place after the first round with a 298 on Tuesday. UTSA’s 54-hole total of 300-301-298—899 was one stroke behind Rice (898) for third, and just 10 behind team champion Santa Clara’s 889. Colorado State was second with an 894. Pacific and Louisiana-Lafayette tied for fifth (904).

Freshman Kyle Collins tied for 21st with a 73-75-78—226, while sophomore transfer Thomas Kearney tied for 35th (77-75-77—229). Sophomore Nick Olivarri and junior Kitt Thabungkan rounded out the top five in 41st (79-82-70—231) and 48th (80-77-76—233), respectively. Sophomore Sean Burch competed as an individual and finished 75th (85-83-83—251).

The Roadrunners host the 10th annual UTSA Intercollegiate on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 20-21, at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.
