HOUSTON – UTSA senior All-American Brandon Buteaux took the first step toward qualifying for nationals with an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the men’s heptathlon to highlight action for the men’s track and field team Saturday at the Houston Indoor Invitational held at Bill Yeoman Field House.

Buteaux (right) was the top collegiate finisher and second overall behind an unattached competitor in the heptathlon, scoring 5,202 points for the top mark in the Southland Conference so far this season. The school record-holder (5,519) posted marks of 7.36 in the 60 meters, 21-5 Ľ in the long jump, 40-2 in the shot put, 6-7 in the high jump, 8.31 in the 60m hurdles, 13-7 Ľ in the pole vault and 2:52.35 in the 1,000m.

Senior teammate Bryan Wolfe was right behind Buteaux with 5,195 points as the second-best collegian and third overall behind former Texas A&M standout Allen Bulick (5,321). Freshman Tommy Wolfe, Bryan’s younger brother, finished eighth with 4,515 points in his first collegiate heptathlon.

The men were solid around the board posting seven other top-five finishes. Freshman Gaston Griffin, the conference leader in the 400m (47.98), continued to impress on a team full of quarter-milers, finishing third overall in 48.60. Senior David Burnett, the 2005 conference champion, took fifth in 49.71, while junior Scott Briscoe was 10th in 49.83.

Sophomore Steven Brown finished fourth overall and third among collegians in the long jump with a leap of 23-0 ˝, while redshirt freshman William Vese and senior Marques Mitchell were solid in the 60m hurdles, placing second (8.04) and third (8.15), respectively, among NCAA athletes.

Senior Chris Layman was third in the 800m with a 1:56.31 clocking and senior Justin Pitchford took sixth in 1:56.47. The distance medley relay placed third in their first outing with a 10:27.99 effort.

The Roadrunners are off until the SLC Indoor Championships on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 17-18, at Yeoman Field House in Houston.
