Second-half shooting paces Southeastern Louisiana to 66-63 win over UTSA

HAMMOND, La. – The UTSA women’s basketball team (12-8, 7-2 SLC) had its five-game winning streak snapped by Southeastern Louisiana (8-12, 5-5 SLC) Saturday in a 66-63 decision at the University Center.

Junior forward Vivian Ewalefo (right) picked up her second consecutive double-double with game-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead four Roadrunners in double-figure scoring. Senior guard Nicole Dunson added 16 points, while seniors Katie Sandefur and Lacy Mingee chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Sophomore guard Brooke Neciase’s team-high 18 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, including 4-of-4 from downtown led the Lady Lions in scoring.

UTSA opened an 11-2 lead with 15:38 left in the first half, Sandefur and Ewalefo combined for nine points for the Runners. Southeastern Louisiana pulled within two points (21-19) on back-to-back 3-pointers by Necaise with 7:36 to go in the half.

Junior forward Brenita Williams’ jumper knotted the game at 23-all with 5:18 left in the frame. The Lady Lions took their first lead 25-23 on a lay-up by junior forward Jazmin Cain with 4:43 remaining.

The Roadrunners regained the lead, 29-27, when Ewalefo connected on a 18-footer at the 2:41 mark. Ewalefo pushed the lead to 32-29 with a pair of jumpers and a free throw with: 32 ticks left in the half. At the half, UTSA led, 32-31.

Dunson opened the second half scoring seven straight points to give UTSA a 39-37 edge with 16:53 left in the second half.

SLU went on a 14-0 run with the help of four consecutive 3-point baskets, including two by Necaise with 7:08 to go in the game. A pair of free throws by Necaise, gave the Lady Lions their biggest lead of the game of 14 points, 64-50, at the 4:58 mark.

The Runners would rally from the 14-point deficit, scoring the next 13 points. Ewalefo led the run with six points. With: 29 seconds left, Ewalefo pulled UTSA within 64-63 on a jumper, but Necaise’s free throws sealed the victory for SLU as the Roadrunners fall 66-63.

UTSA hits the road again for two SLC games, when McNeese State Cowgirls host the Roadrunners Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Burton Coliseum.
