Ewalefo’s double-double paces UTSA to 67-57 win at Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, La. – UTSA junior forward Vivian Ewalefo’s second career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds paced the Roadrunners (12-7, 7-1 SLC), winners of five straight, to a 67-57 victory over Southland Conference member Nicholls State (2-18, 1-8 SLC) Thursday night at Stopher Gym.
Ewalefo (right) held game-high honors with both 23 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center Lacy Mingee added 17 points, while freshman guard Monica Gibbs chipped in with 10 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Sophomore guards Katherine Plummer and Claire Barry led Nicholls State with 16 points apiece.
Nicholls State got out to an early 7-6 lead on a jumper by junior guard Jamie Octave with 16:19 left in the first half.
UTSA used an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game on a lay-up by Mingee with 15:41 remaining in the half. Mingee led the way scoring six consecutive points; however, the Lady Colonels went on 12-3 run to retake the lead 19-13 at the 11:33 mark. Plummer and Barry combined for all of the 12 points. This would be the last time Nicholls State would lead in the ball game.
A 10-0 run gave UTSA a 23-19 lead at the halfway mark of the half. Gibbs and Ewalefo posted 10 points apiece as UTSA led, 38-33, at the break.
UTSA pushed its lead to 13 points (52-39) using a 12-6 run to start the second half. Dunson keyed the run with five straight points and Ewalefo chipped in with seven points. The Roadrunners then extended their lead to 15 points, which would be the largest of the game, on a 3-pointer by Mingee with 6:33 left in the game.
The Lady Colonels with trim the lead to 61-53, when freshman guard Keyona McKibbens connected on a 3-point basket with 3:18 left in the game. This would the closest Nicholls would get for the rest of the game.
UTSA closed out the game with 6-2 run and held on for the 67-57 win.
