Brooks, 4x4 lead strong UTSA effort at Boise State Athletes Invitational

NAMPA, Idaho – UTSA junior Larry Brooks won the 800 meters and anchored the 4x400-meter relay team to a school record-setting performance for the second consecutive weekend to highlight a strong showing by the men’s track and field team on Friday-Saturday at the Boise State Athletes Invitational held at the Idaho Sports Center.

Brooks (right) led an impressive one-two finish for the Roadrunners in the 800m, circling in 1:53.1 just ahead of freshman Mthobisi Baloyi’s runner-up time of 1:53.2.

The 4x400m relay team of freshman Gaston Griffin, senior T.R. Sissel, junior Scott Briscoe and Brooks finished second behind Houston (3:12.09) with a 3:12.86 clocking. That time broke the school record of 3:13.85 set last week in Houston by senior David Burnett, Sissel, Briscoe and Brooks.

Showing off impressive depth in the quarter-mile, the “B” team of sophomore Dominic Brown, Burnett, senior Bryan Wolfe and sophomore Eric Miller took fourth in 3:20.97. In the open 400m, Griffin clocked a 48.32 for second, while Sissel and Briscoe were close behind in third (48.63) and fourth (48.76), respectively.

Sophomore speedster Cedric Harris (left) broke the school record in the indoor 200m with a third-place time of 21.53. His mark bettered the old standard of 21.69 set by Francis Ngapout in 2002.

Sophomore Steven Brown leaped to a season-best mark of 23-3 ˝ to win the long jump and sped to a season-best 6.91 for third place in the 60-meter dash. The Mesquite native closed out his weekend with a 22.12 clocking that was good for fifth in the 200m close behind Harris’ 21.53.

Junior transfer Benson Cheserek got in on the winning ways with a 4:17.34 clocking that won the mile. Baloyi was impressive in the 3,000m with a third-place time of 8:40.74.

In the throws, sophomore Luke Johnson was half an inch shy of senior teammate Rob Stager’s school record in the 35-pound weight throw with a 53-7 measure good for sixth place. Johnson posted a runner-up mark of 51-5 ˝ in the shot put while Stager was third (50-1 ľ).

Senior Marques Mitchell posted a career-best time of 8.13 to finish second in the 60m hurdles, just ahead of sophomore William Vese and Wolfe, who finished third (8.14) and fourth (8.35), respectively. Vese also finished third among collegians in the triple jump with a 44-0 ľ effort.

The Roadrunners return to action next Saturday, Feb. 4, when they travel to the Houston Indoor Classic.
