UTSA falls behind early, drops 77-68 decision at Louisiana-Monroe
Box Score
MONROE – Freshman Eric Young scored all 17 of his points in the second half but Louisiana-Monroe used hot early shooting to build a big lead and hang on for a 77-68 win over UTSA Saturday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Roadrunners fall to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the Southland Conference, while the Indians improve to 8-11 and 4-3.
Young nearly matched his season-high of 18 points with a solid second-half showing, while three other Roadrunners reached double figures as well. Freshmen Aldric Reynolds and Nkem Ojougboh posted 11 points and sophomore Abe Donlon added 10. Young also had a team-best seven rebounds along with sophomore Roderick Rodgers and Donlon.
James Perkins led ULM with 16 points, nailing 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. Tony Hooper posted 15 points, while Gary Robinson and RoShon Jacobs pitched in with 12 and 11, respectively.
The Indians were on fire from the field to start the first half, building a 25-7 lead through the first 9:16. ULM drained seven of their first eight 3-pointers in extending that lead to 22 at 39-17 with 5:25 left until the half.
UTSA used a 12-0 run keyed by treys from junior Chris Thompson and freshman Aldric Reynolds to close the gap to 39-29 at the break.
The Roadrunners kept within range for most of the second half, eventually cutting the deficit to seven at 61-54 on a Young tip-in at the 4:18 mark. That was as close UTSA would get as ULM held on with 10 free throws down the stretch for the 77-68 victory.
The Roadrunners return to San Antonio for the first of four straight home games against Nicholls State on Thursday, Feb. 2. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
