Jan. 27, 2006 UTSA shuts out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in season opener SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis team opened the 2006 season with a 7-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center. In their second match of the day, the Roadrunners fell to Middle Tennessee State, 5-2. Freshman Nathalie Wallin began the day with a 6-3, 2-6, (10-4) win over TAMU-CC’s Felippa Figeiredo at No. 1 singles. Freshman Sandra Kukla dropped the first set at No. 2 singles to Carmen Abeaboru, 1-6, but bounced back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3. The Roadrunners breezed through the other sets as freshman Monika Drabkova handed Erika Iriate a 6-1, 7-5 decision, followed by freshman Karen Scida cruising by Lana Burton, 6-4, 6-1. Also, picking up wins were sophomore Tanya Hasking and junior Ana Paula Soto. In doubles action, the Roadrunners won the point with three victories over the Islanders. Hasking and Scida defeated Iriate and Figueiredo, 8-3, at No. 1, while Drabkova and Kukla got the 8-2 win at No. 2 over Schmidt and Abeaboeru. At No. 3 doubles, Wallin and Harless scored an 8-3 victory over Burton and Amanda Brahim. In the second match, the Blue Raiders took the doubles point with victories in all three matchups, including a narrow 9-8, (7-3) decision at No. 1 with Kelly Adams and Marlene Chemin over Hasking and Scida. UTSA won a pair of singles matches at No. 1 with Wallin handling Chemin a 6-1, 6-4 defeat and at No. 2 with Kukla a 6-3, 6-1 victor over Claudia Szabo. Middle Tennessee won the other four singles to clinch the match, 5-2. The Runners return to action Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against SMU at the UTSA Tennis Center. |
