Katie Sandefur and Lacy Mingee Combine for 29 Points to Lead UTSA Past Northwestern State 73-65 in SLC Action

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s basketball team (10-7, 5-1 SLC) ended a six-game losing streak against Southland Conference foe Northwestern State Lady Demons (10-6, 3-2 SLC) with a 73-65 win Thursday night in the Convocation Center.
Senior forward Katie Sandefur’s (right) 17 points led UTSA in scoring, while senior center Lacy Mingee added 12 points and hauled in a team-high nine rebounds. Chipping with 10 points was sophomore guard Terrie Davis. The Roadrunners have won a season-high three games in-a-row.
Senior guard Sheronda Bell led Northwestern State with a career-high 31 points, sophomore guard Tena Matthews added 15 points.
UTSA struck first early with a 12-6 lead on a 6-0 run lead by four points by Sandefur; however, Northwestern State knotted the game 14-all with 9:09 remaining on a jumper made by Bell.
Freshman guard Farren Fox ignited a 14-0 run, by scoring five straight points, giving UTSA its biggest lead of the half 35-21 with 1:40 remaining. A basket by Matthews ended the Lady Demons 6-minute drought.
At the half, UTSA led 39-23 over Northwestern State
The Lady Demons opened the second half with a 7-2 run to trimming the lead to 11 points (41-30), but UTSA push back the lead to 52-34 with a 11-4 run with 13:10 to go in the game.
A 13-0 run by the Lady Demons cut the deficit to 52-45 at the 8:51 mark, but the Roadrunners extended their lead to 62-54 with a 9-3 run led by Mingee’s four points during the run.
Bell tried to rally the Lady Demons late in the game with five consecutive points to pull them within five (66-61), but UTSA was clutch from the free throw going 7-for-8 in the final :50 seconds to seal the game (73-65).
UTSA concludes its three-game homestand against SLC foe Louisiana-Monroe Lady Indians on Saturday, Jan. 28 in the Convocation Center at 2 p.m. Saturday’s game will be televised live by Time Warner on channel 50.
