Sandefur named Aeropostale/Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

PLANO, Texas - UTSA senior forward Katie Sandefur has been named Aeropostale/Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Jan. 17-22.

Sandefur averaged 16.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in UTSA’s two wins last week. The Kingfisher, Okla., native also shot 67.0 percent (8-for-12) from the field, 67.0 percent (2-for-3) from three-point range and 88.0 percent (14-for-16) from the free throw line.

Sandefur scored a career-high 21 points in the 75-71 overtime win at Sam Houston State. She was flawless at the stripe, hitting all 11 foul shots, while nailing four of five shots (80%) from the field, including both attempted three-pointers. Sandefur scored 11 of her game-high 21 in the overtime period, including nine consecutive points for UTSA.

The senior forward produced 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out two assists in the thrilling 66-48 victory over then-top place Stephen F. Austin. Sandefur went 4-for-7 (57%) from the floor and 3-for-5 (60%) from the charity stripe against the Ladyjacks.

Sandefur is currently the third best shooter in the league with a 57.7 field goal accuracy against Southland teams. She also ranks 14th in the SLC in free throw percentage, 76.6 percent, and is tied for 20th for most points (10.2) and assists (2.0) per game.

This weekly honor is Sandefur’s first and UTSA’s first since the 2003-04 season. UTSA is 9-7 overall and third in the SLC standings at 4-1.
