HOUSTON – UTSA men’s tennis team opened the 2006 season with a 6-0 loss against No. 35 Rice Sunday afternoon on the indoor courts at the Downtown Club at the Met.
Filip Zivonjinovic defeated Shawn Steward 6-1, 6-2 at number four, while Jason Mok handed Adam Becker a 6-2, 6-2 loss at number five.
Tony Haerle and Rodrigo Gabriel both picked up wins to sweep at the three and six positions, respectively. Anthony Portois went the distance against Robert Searle, but dropped his match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the final match of the day, Ralph Knupfer held on a third-set super tiebreak to beat Andre Moreira 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.
The Roadrunners travel to Tampa, Fla., as they face South Florida on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
