UTSA's Andre Moreira Advances to Consolation Semis in Men's Tennis

HOUTSON – UTSA’s freshmen Andre Moreira advanced to the consolation semifinals on Jan.21, at the Met Collegiate Indoor Invitational in Houston, Texas hosted by Rice.

Moreira picked up a 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 win over Jorge Vasquez of Tyler. He cruised by Clint Boling of Clemson 6-3, 6-3 en route to moving on to the semifinals. Also garnering wins were senior Anthony Portois defeating David Galic of Baylor 6-3, 6-3 and sophomore Adam Becker winning his match from David Herrera of Prairie View A&M via a withdraw.

Portois dropped his quarterfinals match to Ryan Young of Clemson 6-1, 6-4 and Becker fell to Ryan Hudson of Abilene Christian 6-2, 6-2. Senior Joe Olfindo was handed a 6-1, 6-1 loss by Rodrigo Gabriel of Rice.

In doubles action, freshman Rubin Fernandes and Moreira picked up the win over Alberto Agis and Manuel Gonzales of UTA, 8-1, but were stopped by Eban Puglia and Jason Ray, of ACU by score of 9-7. Becker and freshman Shaun Steward lost their doubles match to Hudson and Casper Steenkamp of ACU, 8-5.
