SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s basketball team (9-7, 4-1 SLC) picked up its fourth win in the Southland Conference (SLC) play with a 66-48 pounding against Stephen F. Austin (11-6, 5-1 SLC) Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.

Senior guard Nicole Dunson (right) led UTSA with 12 points, while senior forward Katie Sandefur posted 11 points and collected seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Terrie Davis added 10 points, while senior center Lacy Mingee chipped in with eight points.

“It feels good, because they were atop the conference (SLC) and to know we can beat a really good team in our conference is a great confidence boost,” said Dunson. “Just being able to prove to ourselves we don’t have to barely win games; we can do it big.”

Stephen F. Austin's leading scorer was senior forward LaToya Mills with a team-high 12 and a game-high 11 rebounds. Also, chipping in with nine points was senior guard Kirby Killingsworth.

After a quick 4-2 lead by Stephen F. Austin, the Roadrunner took their first lead (5-4) of the game at the 16:07 mark of the first half. Freshman guard Monica Gibbs led the way with three points. Then the Runners jumped to a 20-8 lead with 6:45 left in the first half with a 15-4 run. Mingee and junior forward Vivian Ewalefo each scored four points apiece.

An 8-2 run by the Roadrunners gave them their largest lead of the half 28-10 with 3:58 to go in the frame. Davis and freshman guard Farren Fox hit a pair of 3-pointers and a layup made by freshman forward Destiny Brown led the way.

The Lady Lumberjacks managed to trim the lead to 11 points (28-17) with a 9-2 run with 1:45 remaining in the half. This would be the closest SFA would get for the remainder of the game.

The Roadrunners went into halftime with a 34-21 advantage.

The Runners jumped ahead to a 48-31 margin on a pair of free throws made by Mingee (right) with 11:35 left in game.

With 6:57 remaining in the game, UTSA extended its lead to 20 points on a right corner jumper by Ewalefo. Then freshman guard Monica Gibbs connected on a free throw to give UTSA its largest lead of the game 66-40 at the 2:37 mark.

UTSA’s defense held the league’s top scoring team, who averages 74.5 points per game, to a season-low 48 points.

“I was surprised. They have so many good players on their team,” head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair said. “We got out on their shooters and contested every shot they took.”

The Roadrunners return to action Jan. 26, as they host Northwestern State Lady Demons in the Convocation Center at 7 p.m.
