Contact: Carlos Valdez (210) 458-4930 Rubin Fernandes and Shawn Steward Advance to the Field of 16 at the Met Collegiate Indoor Invitational HOUTSON – UTSA’s freshmen Rubin Fernandes and Shaun Steward each advanced to the round of 16 at the Met Collegiate Indoor Invitational hosted by Rice in Houston, Texas.
Fernandes opened play with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kurt Gattiker of Texas Southern before falling 6-0, 6-1 to William Ward of Baylor. Meanwhile, Steward breeze by Jose Talavera of Prairie View A&M 6-2, 6-2, but was stopped by Nahom Serekeberhan of Tyler 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Anthony Portois lost to Bryan Koniecho of Ohio State by a score of 6-3, 6-4, while Adam Becker fell in his first match to Brett Twente of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-0, 6-2. Joe Olfindo dropped a hard fought match to Nicolas Bateman of Prairie View A&M 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Also in action was freshman Andre Moreira who fell to Ralph Knupfer of Rice 6-4, 6-1. Senior Hetori Chaves retired from his match against Jan Cingel of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
In doubles action, the Roadrunners picked up two wins. Fernandes and Andre Moreira handed Bateman and L. Godoy 8-6, while Becker and Steward won via withdraw from Jason Mok and Jon Greenberg of Rice.
