UTSA scores 75-71 overtime win over Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Senior forward Katie Sandefur’s season-high 21 points led the way as the UTSA (8-7, 3-1 SLC) women’s basketball team defeated Sam Houston State (6-10, 1-4 SLC), 75-71, in overtime Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Sandefur (right) scored a game-high 21 points, while senior guard Nicole Dunson and junior forward Vivian Ewalefo chipped in with 17 points apiece. Freshmen guard Farren Fox hauled in a career-best seven rebounds.
Senior guard Angel Brown led Sam Houston State with 17 points, while sophomore guard Sarah Hilton added 15 points.
UTSA came out firing first with a 10-0 run at the 16:49 mark of the first half. Sophomore guard Terrie Davis led the way with five points. Then Sam Houston State trimmed the lead to four points (10-6) with a 6-0 run at the 14:50 mark of the half.
The Bearkats took their first lead of the game (19-17) with 8:59 to go in the first, when junior guard Kendall Homesley and Davison hit a pair of 3-point baskets. However, Davis’ second trifecta of the half gave UTSA back the lead (20-19).
SHSU closed the half with a 5-0 run giving them a 29-28 edge.
UTSA built a six-point lead on a lay-up by senior center Lacy Mingee with 8:38 remaining in the game. Then a 3-pointer by Hilton cut the lead to one point (44-43) with 6:35 left in the second half.
Brown’s free throws tied the game 50-50 1:42 left in the game. The Roadrunners pushed the lead to 54-51, but Hilton’s fourth 3-pointer knotted the game at 54-54 with 37 seconds to go.
Ewalefo’s turnaround jumper put UTSA up 56-54 with seven ticks left, but a Davison hook shot over Sandefur tied the game at 56-all sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Bearkats jumped to a 60-58 lead on junior guard Erica Parker’s lay-up with four minutes left. Sandefur would lead UTSA to victory as she scored the next nine points, giving the Roadrunners a 70-64 lead with :43 second left in overtime.
UTSA returns home to host Stephen F. Austin in the Convocation Center this Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m.
