UTSA looks for third SLC win Thursday at Sam Houston State
SAN ANTONIO - After having their two-game winning streak snapped, the Roadrunners look to get back on the winning track this Thursday, Jan. 19, at Sam Houston State in Southland Conference action. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Johnson Coliseum.

Senior forward Michelle Biley’s bank shot with two seconds left in the game, gave Louisiana-Monroe Lady Indians a 62-61 victory over the UTSA women’s basketball team in Southland Conference (SLC) action on Jan. 14 at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La. ULM had three players scored in double figures, led by Biley’s 16 points and team-high seven rebounds. Senior center Lacy Mingee held game-high honors with 18 points, while sophomore guard Terrie Davis and junior forward Vivian Ewalefo chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman guard Monica Gibbs hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds, while collecting three steals.
Scouting Report On The Lady Bearkats
Sam Houston State has lost its last two SLC games. SHSU dropped a 57-53 decision to McNeese State on Jan. 12 in Lake Charles, La. Northwestern State pounded Sam Houston State 78-60 on Jan. 14 in Natchitoches, La. Sophomore guard Adah Wells leads the team in scoring averaging 9.8 points per game, while junior guard Erica Parker is second with 9.5 points per game.
Last Meeting Between UTSA and Sam Houston State
UTSA went 1-0 last season against Sam Houston State. In their only meeting, the Roadrunner and Lady Bearkats needed overtime in their contest. UTSA came out with the 73-65 win on Feb. 3, in the Convocation Center. The Runners lead the all-time series 22-13 and are 10-7 in the Johnson Coliseum. UTSA has won the last eight meetings, including the last four in Huntsville. The last time Sam Houston State defeated UTSA was on Dec. 28, 1999 (69-67 OT).
Unkind Road For The Runners
UTSA has yet to garner a victory on the road this year. UTSA is 0-3 away from the Convocation Center.
Uncharitable Free Throw Line
In the loss at Monroe, La., UTSA was 16-of-27 for 59 percent fom the free throw line. The Roadrunners shot 22% on 2-of-9 from the chartity stripe in the first half.
UTSA Handles McNeese State
Ewalefo and Sandefur combined for 38 points as the UTSA defeated McNeese State 70-58. Ewalefo led the team with 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Sandefur added 13 points. Senior guard Nicole Dunson chipped in with 13 points. UTSA used a 18-3 run in the final 4:00 minutes to close out the half with a 38-29 lead. Midway though the second half the Roadrunners went on a 11-0 run to seal the victory.
Ewalefo’s Career Day Against Cowgirls
The junior-transfer out of Barton County Community College posted a career-high 25 points paced UTSA. Ewalefo was 9-for-16 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Paint Dominance
The Roadrunners outscored the Cowgirls 40-24 in the paint, including a 24-8 advantage in the first half.
Quick Start
The 2-0 start for UTSA marked the second time Coach Blair opened SLC play winning the first two conference games. The last time she started 2-0 was during the 2001-02 season.
Marking Her Territory
Dunson began the season 11th on the all-time list with 46 career made 3-pointers. She has leaped her way to fifth with 75 trifectas made. Dunson has connected on 29 3-point baskets this season. The Corpus Christi, Texas native, is four 3-point baskets shy of surpassing Julie Rampley (78) for fourth in all-time career 3-pointers made. She leads the team in 3-point shooting percentage at 45% and ranks second in the SLC.
Making Noise In The Scoring and Rebounding Dept.
Sandefur has collected 411 rebounds for 11th in the all-time rebounding list and is the 12th Runners to accumulate over 400 rebounds and 600 points. Fellow teammate, Mingee ranks 14th with 390 boards. Both players are on pace of cracking the top 10 list in rebounds.
Mingee became the 16th Runners to eclipse the 700 points mark. She currently ranks 16th with 730 points in the all-time scoring list and is six points away from passing Latifa Northern for 15th. Also making a push in the scoring department is Sandefur who ranks 20th with 626 points.
Runners Pounce Lions In SLC Opener
Sophomore guard Terrie Davis’ career-highs of 22 points and five 3-pointers paced UTSA to a 75-56 rout against Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions. Senior guard Nicole Dunson and freshman guard Farren Fox each scored 10 points apiece, while Ewalefo collected a career-high 11 rebounds. After allowing SLU to shot over 50 percent in the first half, UTSA’s pick up its defense holding SLU to 17% shooting on 5-of-29 from the field in the second half. The Runners dished out a season-best 20 assists, with freshman guard Monica Gibbs handing out a team-high five dimes.
The Terrie Davis Shooting Clinic
Davis’ 22 points outing paved the way for UTSA’s victory. The Houston, Texas native went going 8-of-10 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from the 3-point line. In the first half, she scored 17 of her 22 points while making 4-of-5 from downtown.
Dialing Long Distance
UTSA set new single-game records for most 3-pointers made (12) and attempts (32) in the loss vs. Buffalo. The previous mark of trifectas made was 11 set earlier this month against Davidson. The old record for attempts was 30 tries against Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Feb. 28, 1993.
