HOUSTON – Junior Larry Brooks (right) won the 800 meters to highlight a solid season-opening performance for the UTSA men’s track and field team Saturday at the Houston Indoor Opener at Bill Yeoman Field House.
Brooks clocked a 1:53.72 to edge Jacob Cedertun of Texas-Arlington (1:54.00) and win the only individual title of the afternoon for the Roadrunners, who posted seven top-five finishes on the day.
Sophomore Luke Johnson was strong in the throwing events, finishing second in the 35-pound weight throw with a mark of 53-0 Ľ and taking fourth in the shot put with a 49-7 effort. Senior Rob Stager was third in the weight throw (52-8 ľ) and seventh in the shot (47-3).
Senior Justin Pitchford placed third in the mile with a 4:21.86 clocking, while redshirt freshman William Vese was fifth in the 55m hurdles in 7.47.
Freshmen Gaston Griffin and Carvey Evans posted a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 400m (49.45) and high jump (6-7 ˝), respectively. The 4x400m relay team concluded the meet with a fourth-place time of 3:20.05.
The Roadrunners return to action next Saturday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Lubbock for the Texas Tech 6-Way.
