Biley’s bank shot lifts Louisiana-Monroe to 62-61 win over UTSA

MONROE, La. – Michelle Biley’s bank shot with two seconds left gave Louisiana-Monroe (10-5, 2-2 SLC) a 62-61 win over the UTSA (7-7, 2-1 SLC) women’s basketball team Saturday night in Southland Conference action at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La.
UTSA was led by senior center Lacy Mingee’s 18 points, while sophomore guard Terrie Davis (right) and junior forward Vivian Ewafelo added 14 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman guard Monica Gibbs hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
Biley led ULM in scoring with 16 points, while April O’Neal chipped in 11.
Louisiana-Monroe took the early lead at 5-1 on a 3-point basket by junior guard Melanie Williams at the 17:46 mark.
The Roadrunners then responded with an 8-0 run to take a 9-5 lead with 15:14 left in the first half. Mingee and Davis each scored four points apiece during the run.
The Roadrunners upped their lead to 16-10 on a layup by Mingee at the 12:43 mark. However, the Lady Indians would trim the deficit to 28-26 when Biley made good on a free throw with 1:37 left in the first half. Kara McKay converted a 3-point play at the 1:23 mark to give UTSA a 31-26 lead at the break.
UTSA jumped out to a 37-26 lead with a quick 6-0 run to start the second half and held a comfortable lead for most of the way until the Lady Indians tied the game at 53-all on a jumper by Biley with 5:34 left. A turnaround jumper by Ewalefo gave UTSA the lead right back, 55-53. The Lady Indians took their first lead of the second half when Howard converted three free throws (58-57) with 4:14 to play in the game.
UTSA regained the lead 59-58 on a jumper Mingee and free throws by Ewalefo and Destiny Brown extended the lead to 61-58 with 1:37 remaining. Nedra Winston drained a jumper with 48 seconds left to pull ULM to within 61-60. A UTSA turnover with 23 ticks left gave the ball back to the Indians, setting up Biley's bank shot with two seconds left.
UTSA heads to Huntsville, Texas, for an SLC matchup against Sam Houston State next Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum.
