UTSA Travels To Louisiana-Monroe For SLC Matchup
SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women's basketball team hits the road for a SLC showdown against Louisiana-Monroe Lady Indians on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m., in Monroe, La.

Last Outing: Junior forward Vivian Ewalefo and senior forward Katie Sandefur combined for 38 points as the UTSA women’s basketball team defeated McNeese State Cowgirls 70-58 in Southland Conference (SLC) action on Jan. 7 in the Convocation Center. Ewalefo led the Roadrunners with a career-high 25 and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Sandefur added 13 points. Senior guard Nicole Dunson chipped in with 13 points. McNeese’s leading scorer was freshman guard Courtnee’ Hollins with 14 points. UTSA used a 18-3 run in the final 4:00 minutes to close out the half with a 38-29 lead. Midway the second half the Roadrunners went on a 11-0 run to seal the victory. Also the Roadrunners forced 22 Cowgirls turnovers and held a 40-24 edge in points in the paint.
Setting The Scene
The Roadrunners look to continue their winning ways when they face SLC foe Louisiana-Monroe this Saturday night in Monroe, La. UTSA opened conference play picked up two wins against SLU and McNeese, while ULM dropped its last two conference matches.
Scouting Report On The Lady Indians
Louisiana-Monroe is 8-5 overall mark and 0-2 in SLC play. The Lady Indians has lost their two conference games by a combine seven points. ULM began SLC play with a 58-54 loss to Northwestern State on Jan. 7 in Natchitoches, La. This past Monday night, ULM fell to Texas-Arlington 58-55 in Arlington, Texas. Sophomore guard LaJenna Howard led ULM with a game-high 21 points in the loss to UTA and her 11.7 points per game leads the team.
Last Meeting Between UTSA and ULM
The Roadrunners went 0-1 against Louisiana-Monroe last season. In their only meeting, the Runners dropped a 75-72 decision to the Lady Indians on Jan. 6 in Monroe, La. ULM leads the all-time series 19-9, including a 2-11 advantage at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Ewalefo Handles Cowgirls
The junior-transfer out of Barton County Community College posted a career-high 25 points to pace UTSA to its second conference win. Ewalefo went 9-for-16 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Paint Dominance
The Roadrunners outscored the Cowgirls 40-24 in the paint, including a 24-8 advantage in the first half.
Quick Start
The 2-0 start for UTSA is the second time Coach Blair has opened SLC play with two wins. The last time they began 2-0 was during the 2001-02 season.
Moving On Up
Dunson began the season 11th on the all-time list with 46 career made 3-pointers. She has leaped her way to fifth with 74 trifecters made. Dunson has connected on 28 3-point baskets this season. The Corpus Christi, Texas native, is five 3-point baskets shy of surpassing Julie Rampley (78) for fourth in all-time career 3-pointers made.
Setting New Marks
Sandefur has collected 408 rebounds for 11th in the all-time rebounding list and is the 12th Runners to accumulate over 400 rebounds and 600 points. Fellow teammate, Mingee ranks 14th with 382 boards. Both players are on pace of cracking the top 10 list in rebounds.
Mingee became the 16th Runners to eclipse the 700 points mark. She currently ranks 16th with 712 points in the all-time scoring list and is six points away from passing Latifa Northern for 15th. Also making a push in the scoring department is Sandefur who ranks 20th with 624 points.
Runners Pounce Lions In SLC Opener
Sophomore guard Terrie Davis’ career-highs of 22 points and five 3-pointers paced UTSA to a 75-56 rout against Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions. Senior guard Nicole Dunson and freshman guard Farren Fox each scored 10 points apiece, while Ewalefo collected a career-high 11 rebounds. After allowing SLU to shot over 50 percent in the first half, UTSA’s pick up its defense holding SLU to 17% shooting on 5-of-29 from the field in the second half. The Runners dished out a season-best 20 assists, with freshman guard Monica Gibbs handing out a team-high five dimes.
The Terrie Davis Shooting Clinic
Davis’ 22 points outing paved the way for UTSA’s victory. The Houston, Texas native went going 8-of-10 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from the 3-point line. In the first half, she scored 17 of her 22 points while making 4-of-5 from downtown.
Runners Rally Comes Up Short Against Colorado St.
Colorado State held on for the 63-59 win. The Roadrunners mounted a fierce comeback in the second half to get within three points with :20 seconds remaining, but the Rams went 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds to seal the win. CSU had three players in double figures with Sara Hunter lead the way with 14 points. Senior forward Katie Sandefur posted a team-high 13 points, while Ewalefo added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Second-half Rally Propels Buffalo To Victory
UB rallied from a seven-points deficit to score the 73-62 victory on Dec. 30. The Bulls went 12-for-23 from the field (52%) in the second half, while holding the Roadrunners to 11-of-38 (28%).
Dialing Long Distance
UTSA set new single-game records for most 3-pointers made (12) and attempts (32) in the loss vs. Buffalo. The previous mark of trifecters made was 11 set earlier this month against Davidson. The old record for attempts was 30 tries against Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Feb. 28, 1993.
Strong Start, Slow Finish
An 11-day layoff the Roadrunners did not any rust as they grabbed the early lead (15-8) and ending the half with a 33-26 edge. The Runners then started the second frame 1-for-8 and were outscored 16-3 to the begin the second half. They ended the game shooting 36% from the floor on 11-of-38 from the field.
