Ewalefo and Sandefur combined for 38 points to pace UTSA to 70-58 win over McNeese State

SAN ANTONIO – Senior forward Katie Sandefur and junior forward Vivian Ewalefo combined for 38 points as the UTSA women’s basketball (7-6, 2-0 SLC) concluded its four-game homestand with a 70-59 win over the McNeese State Cowgirls (6-7, 0-2) in Southland Conference action Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
Ewalefo (Las Vegas, Nev.) (right) posted a career-high 25 points and eight rebounds to lead UTSA in scoring and rebounding. Sandefur (Kingfisher, Okla.) and senior guard Nicole Dunson (Corpus Christi, Texas) each chipped in with 13 points.
McNeese was led by freshman guard Courtnee’ Hollins’ 14 points. Senior forward Shamika Stewart grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Ewalefo paced UTSA early on scoring the first six-out-of-eight points as the Roadrunners and Cowgirls were knotted at 8-all with 15:11 left in the first half.
McNeese State grabbed its first lead of the half on 3-point basket by senior guard Clarissa Clark at the 13:49 mark (11-8). Then used a 7-2 run to pull away to a 23-18 lead with 7:19 to go in the first. Senior forward Marquita Williams scored four points during the run.
Sandefur (below) and Ewalefo combined for 10 points during an 18-3 run to closed out the half with the 38-29 advantage.
UTSA jumped to a 49-37 lead at the 13-minute mark, but McNeese State answered by scoring the next six points to trim score 49-43. This would be the closet the Cowgirls would get for the remaindered of the game.
The Roadrunners built a 17-point lead (60-43) with a 11-0 run, which was the largest lead of the game; however, the Cowgirls cut the deficit to nine points (62-53) with a 10-2 run at the 6:20 mark of the second half.
The Runners defense stiffen up as they held the Cowgirls to five points in the final five minutes of the game as UTSA picked up its second SLC win with a 70-58 victory.
