Davis’ Career Night Gives UTSA a 75-56 Win Over Southeastern Louisiana In Southland Conference Action

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA (6-6, SLC 1-0) women’s basketball team opened Southland Conference play with a 75-56 win against the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions (3-7, 0-1 SLC) Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
Sophomore guard Terrie Davis (right) led UTSA in scoring with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, including hitting a career-best five 3-pointers. Senior guard Nicole Dunson added 10 points and junior forward Vivian Ewalefo collected a career-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Farren Fox added 10 points. The win ended UTSA’s season long three game losing streak.
The Lady Lions were led by junior forward Brenita Williams’ 17 points, while sophomore guard Brooke Necaise chipped in with nine points.
UTSA jumped to a 14-8 lead with 14:27 left in the half on a break away layup by Davis, as she scored eight of the 14 points during the run. The Lady Lions trimmed the lead to one-point (14-13) on jumper by junior guard Carmen Labet.
Davis and Dunson (below) combined for a pair of 3-pointers and a layup by freshman guard Monica Gibbs pushed the Runners to a 23-17 lead at the halfway mark of the first half. UTSA extended its lead by as many as 11 points when Ewalefo connected on a pair of free throws with 5:02 left in the frame.
However, Southeastern Louisiana cut the deficit to 36-32 with 11-4 run when Williams nailed a short jumper with 3:01 left in the half. Williams lead way with six points. Davis’s fourth 3-pointer of the half stopped the Lady Lions run and push UTSA back to seven points (39-32).
UTSA ended the half with a 41-37 lead, as they connected on 7-of-12 from downtown for 58 percent.
UTSA outscored SLU 34-19 in the second half. The Roadrunners built a 22-point (68-46) lead with 6:05 left in the game. The Runners picked up their defense as they held the Lady Lions to 5-of-29 shooting in the second half for 17 percent.
UTSA continues SLC play this Saturday, Jan. 9 against McNeese State in the Convocation Center.
