No. 10 Arizona State holds off UTSA, 78-64

TEMPE, Ariz. –No. 10 Arizona State handed the UTSA women’s basketball team a 78-64 loss Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Roadrunners drop to 5-4 on the year, while the Sun Devils improve to 9-1.
Leading UTSA in scoring was junior forward Vivian Ewalefo (right)with her first career double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Nicole Dunson chipped in with 10 points, while senior center Lacy Mingee scored nine.
Junior forward Emily Westerberg and senior forward Krsiten Kovesdy led Arizona State with 17 points apiece.
UTSA took its first lead of the game with 9:33 left in the first half on a lay-up by Ewalefo (17-15). The Runners built their largest lead of the game, 23-19, with 5:59 left in the first on a jumper from Dunson.
The Sun Devils regained the lead at the 3:35 mark when senior guard YoVanna Rosenthal connected on a 3-point basket from the left wing. ASU led, 31-29, at the break.
Arizona State upped its lead to 44-36 at the 15:41 mark in the second half with a 14-7 run, led by junior forward Aubree Johnson with four points.
The Roadrunners trimmed the lead to 44-40 with 13:55 left, when sophomore guard Terrie Davis connected on a lay-up.
The Sun Devils would extend their lead to double digits (54-43) with 9:27 left in the game when freshman guard Briann January connected on two free throws.
The Roadrunners cut the deficit to 61-55 with a 7-4 run at the 6:06 mark. This would be the closest UTSA would get for the remainder of the game.
The Roadrunners return home to the Convocation Center as they host the Wells Fargo/UTSA New Year’s Classic on Dec. 30-31. The Roadrunners will play Buffalo on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
