Nicole Dunson leads UTSA past Davidson, 75-69

HOUSTON – The UTSA women’s basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 75-69 win over Davidson on the final day of the Gene Hackerman Invitational at Autry Court.
UTSA snapped its two-game losing streak and improved to 5-3 on the year; meanwhile, Davidson dips to 1-4.
Senior Nicole Dunson led the Roadrunners with 17 points, junior guard Ana Oliveira added a season-high 12 points. Freshman forward Destiny Brown, who was named to the all-tournament team, led UTSA with six rebounds.
Leading scorer for Davidson was senior forward Janell Crayton with 16 points. Junior forward Bynn Kelley and junior guard Jessica Mitchell added 12 points apiece.
UTSA jumped to a 13-6 lead at the 14:17 mark of the first half. Dunson led the way with six points on two 3-point baskets.
The Wildcats pulled within three points (15-12) on a jumper by freshman guard Kelly Gassie with 11:58 left in the first frame. This would be the closest the Wildcats would get in the first half.
The Roadrunners jumped to an 11-point lead (33-22) on a lay-up by freshman forward Nichelle Parks with 1:42 left in the half.
At the half, UTSA led Davidson 33-27. The Roadrunners shot 50 percent from the floor, while holding the Wildcats to 29 percent.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game (42-41) on a free throw basket by Kelly with14:36 left in the game.
UTSA would regain the lead (54-50) on back-to-back 3-point baskets by Dunson and Davis from the left wing with 8:06 remaining in the game.
With 5:03 left in the game, UTSA upped its lead to 62-52 when Davis hit her second 3-point basket of the half.
Mitchell’s four-point play with less than a minute left in the game would bring Davidson within three points. This would be the closest the Wildcats would get.
UTSA hits the road to Tempe, Ariz., on Dec. 19 as they face off against nationally ranked Arizona State at the Wells Fargo Arena, tip off set for 7:30 p.m. (CST).
